Become A Coupon Superstar Day 14: Sailing Through Checkout

Photobucket

We all want our coupon shopping to go smoothly. This means no problems and sliding through checkout. Here are some tips to help make that happen, however know sometimes things just happen.

Smile!
I cannot stress how important this is. If you feel up to it ask them how they’re doing. Remember cashiers are people too.

Heads up
If I plan to do more than one transaction, I simply let them know and ask if it’s ok. Of course, I know it is ok to do it. So why bother? Well, I want to give them fair warning and a choice. I feel it helps to put them in the right mind set.

Be Courteous
I don’t know if you have noticed but using coupons is not always looked at in a positive light. This is why it is important to be aware and courteous of others. If you have a big purchase and someone gets behind you with a few things, let them go ahead. If your stuff is already on the counter let them now you may be awhile as you’re using coupons. Now, it’s up to them to wait it on or move onto another lane. By the way, the same goes if you are doing multiple transactions.

Be Prepared
Have all your coupons ready to hand to the cashier and store card if needed before you get there. I take my coupons out of my binder as I get the product and place them in a pile in my cart. Once I’m done with my shopping list I then double check to make sure I have all my coupons. I then add them up to know how many I have. This is so that at checkout I can count the number of beeps to be sure all my coupons were scanned.

Store Policy
You don’t want to hand over your coupons just to find out they don’t take internet printables or you can only use 3 like coupons and so on and so forth. Save yourself, your cashier and others time by knowing the policy.

Speak up
If you do have a problem during checkout politely, discuss it with your cashier. If it still can’t be fixed, ask to speak with a manager. It is okay to speak up. You just have to decide how much time you’re willing to give up to get the problem fixed. Or if it’s better to let it go.

Check your receipt
Mistakes happen all the time it is perfectly natural. So check over your receipt before you leave the store. If you see a mistake just go over to customer service and they will handle it or let your cashier know. If you catch it during checkout politely point it out.

Remember sometimes people are just plain mean and no matter what you do there is no stopping their rudeness. Pray for them and then just grin and bear it!

Become A Coupon Superstar Day 13: Walgreens 101

Photobucket

Walgreens can definitely be a little complicated. However they do have a good number of deals that make it worth learning how to coupon shop there.

7 day Ad Coupons:
These are found in the weekly ad. The majority of the time these will display a price on them (i.e. Reynolds Wrap .99¢) and will have a limit on them. You have to use the coupon in order to get it for the price listed on it. Once your coupon is scanned, it will subtract the appropriate amount to make it .99¢. You do not have to cut these out simply show the coupons to your cashier, and they will scan it or type in in. These are store coupons so they can be combined with manufacturer coupons.

Register Rewards:
Walgreens Register Reward program rewards you for purchasing qualifying items each week. When you buy the qualifying item(s) needed to earn the Register Reward (RR), it will print at the end of the transaction. You can then use these like cash on your next purchase.
Every week in the ad will be a few RR deals some, which are free after RR. By combining these RR deals with a manufacturer coupon, you can get the item for better than free, free or almost free after RR. Yes, you CAN use coupons on RR deals and still get your RR. If your RR does not print, it can be on of several reasons:

  • You did not buy the correct item.
  • You did not buy the correct amount of items.
  • The catalina machine is not working (there will be a red light on)
If this happens to you simply let your cashier know and usually the manager will take care of you. However if they insist it is because you used coupons and can’t fix it simply return the item.

RR Deals Unlimited-
Since these deals are not tracked through a loyalty card you can do them as many times as you want (Store managers do have the right to put limits). This is great right? Yes, but there are a few rules:
  • You can only do the deal once in the transaction to get the RR. For example the deal is: buy a Colgate toothbrush at $2.99 get a $2 RR. If you buy two in the same transaction you will only get one RR for $2. In order to get the RR for both you have to split them into two transactions.
  • You cannot pay for a RR deal using a RR from the same deal and get another RR. Have I lost you? Ok using the same example as above: You buy a Colgate toothbrush at $2.99 get a $2 RR. You cannot use the $2 Colgate toothbrush RR to buy more Colgate toothbrushes and earn another Register Reward. If you were to do this another RR would NOT print.
  • You cannot pay for a RR deal using a RR from the same manufacturer and get another RR. Using the same example again. You buy a Colgate toothbrush at $2.99 get a $2 RR. You then buy Palmolive at $2.49 which should earn you a $2 RR, you pay for it using your $2 RR from the Colgate and your RR does not print. So, how are you suppose to know if it’s the same manufacturer. Well usually on the RR it will say “Compliments of Whoever”. However sometimes it simply says “thanks for your purchase”. I find it works best for me if I write on the RR what it’s from (for the toothbrush I would write: Colgate). It’s hard to know what company makes what and for this Google is your best friend. Don’t worry this does not happen often, but speaking of toothbrushes that’s usually when I see it. Using the same example let’s say in the next couple weeks there will be a Colgate toothpaste deal which means I cannot pay for it with my Colgate toothbrush RR and get another RR.

Rolling RRs-
Now let‘s say that you want to stock up, since the toothbrushes are such a great deal but you don’t want to pay so much out of pocket (OOP). What do you do? This is where you want to use another RR deal to pay for this one. This is called “rolling”. For example the RR deals this week are:
Colgate MaxFresh or MaxWhite toothbrush $2.99, earn $2 RR - $1 Q
Iceland Health Omega 3 Fish Oil $8, earn $8 RR
Roots of Nature Hair Care $6, earn $6 RR - $1 Q

Notice that the RR for the Colgate and Roots together add up to $8 the price of the Omega 3. So, you could roll these into each other back and forth. Of course you’ll have to throw in a couple of fillers (which I will discuss next). If you don’t feel like buying all the other stuff simply do the deals multiple times, pay cash and then save the RR's you collect each time and use them on groceries or other RR deals later.

Coupon Rules:
You must have as many items as you have coupons. The registers are programmed not to accept any more coupons (excluding Walgreens Ad Qs) than you have items. So, make sure and add up your items and coupons before you check out. Register Rewards are coupons. This is why I said you would need a filler. If you are buying the Iceland (1 item) using the Colgate and Roots RR (2 coupons) you would need a filler (something cheap, pencils are a favorite) to make it two items for two coupons.

Walgreens registers are programmed to not allow overage. So, let’s say you buy Reese’s for .89¢ and you have a coupon for $1 off. When your coupon is scanned it will beep and need to be entered in at .89¢. However, be forewarned that not all Walgreens will do this some will simply refuse the coupon. If this happens to you take your coupon back and have them remove the item. You can avoid this by buying multiples of the item. For instance you could buy 4 Reese’s and use three $1 Qs paying .56¢ for 4. I know FREE is better so if you have another Walgreen’s around then try your luck there first. There will be some instances where doing it that way is still a really good deal you’ll just have to work out the deal.

You can still get overage when using the 7 day Qs. For example: Reynold’s Wrap is regularly priced at $1.49, use $1 Q making it .49¢ then use the 7 day Q advertising it for .89¢ which will deduct .60¢ from your order. Which means you get it for free plus .11¢ overage.

Coupon Order:
The best order to hand your coupons to the cashier is Manufacturer Coupons, then Walgreens Ad Qs (7 day Qs), then Register Rewards.

My Walgreens Deal Post:
When posting the Walgreens deals this is the format I use:
Item, Price, RR Earned
- Coupon to Use
=Price After Coupon (OOP)
Final Cost: Price after Coupon & RR

This is so you can see what your OOP will be as well as your cost after RR.

Go to Day 14.

Become A Coupon Superstar Day 12: CVS 101

Photobucket

Learning to play the CVS game can seem a little overwhelming. However, it really is easy once you know the basics. This is a simple guide to effective coupon shopping at CVS.

CVS Extra Care Card
Stop in at your local CVS and sign up for a CVS card. You will want to register your card at CVS.com or 1-800-SHOP-CVS since they occasionally send out emails with printable coupons. Once you have your card you will need to use it every time you shop there. As most of the time, you will only get the sale price if your card is scanned. You will also earn 2% back on all your purchases.

Weekly Sales Ad
Check out your weekly ad (or visit us for the ad preview) to see which items are giving back Extra Care Bucks (ECB) upon purchase, some will be free after ECBs. ECBs print out at the bottom of your receipt when you buy qualifying items. You then cut these off and use them like cash on your next purchase. For example:

You buy:
2 Colgate MaxWhite @ $2.99
Use two $1/1 Colgate Q
=$3.98 OOP
Earn $4 ECB
Final Cost: FREE plus .02¢ MM

You then buy
Zantrex-3 at $4.99
-$4 ECB
=.99¢ OOP
Earn $4.99 ECB
Final Cost: FREE

You now have a $4.99 ECB to use on your next purchase. This is what is referred to as “rolling your ECBs” When you buy something that gives ECBs then buy something else that gives ECBs and pay with ECBs. Basically, you spend a little bit of money on your first purchase, allowing you to then use your ECBs on future purchases allowing your OOP to be minimal.

When using your ECBs your total before tax must be equal or greater than the amount of ECBs you have. You cannot use a $5 ECB on a $3 purchase and get cash back or expect it to carry over.

Also in the ad under the ECB deal it will have the limit amount. This limit is per card. So if the limit is 1 you can only do it once period. Not once come back and do it again. Once your limit is reached it will show on the end of your receipt.

Some deals will require you to spend a certain amount. You don’t have to buy it all in one transaction a running total will be kept and can be seen on the end of your receipt.

Monthly Deals
Every month CVS puts out an Extra Value Book that contains ECB deals that are good for the entire month. Sometimes the monthly deals will be advertised in the weekly ad. This does not add to the limit amount. If the monthly limit is 5 the ad will say 5 as well, the limit is still 5 not 10.

Earning Quarterly ECBs
As I mentioned earlier CVS gives you 2% back on all of your purchases. Every 3 months CVS will issue you an ECB for 2% of what you spent that quarter. This is your out of pocket spending.

Where to Get and How to Use CVS Coupons

Red Price Scanning Machines
Most CVS will have one of these machines. Every time you enter the store scan your card first. It will then issue you various store coupons. Sometimes there will be no coupons available. Since they are store coupons you can stack them with manufacturer coupons to maximize your savings. For example you get a store Q for $1 off Bayer, and you have a manufacturer Q for $1 off. To make this even sweeter there is a weekly deal going on that if you buy 1 Bayer at $2.49 you get $2 ECB back. So the deal will look like this:
Bayer $2.49
-$1 CVS Q
-$1 Bayer Q
=.49¢
Earn $2 ECB
Final Cost: FREE plus $1.51 MM!!

CRT
These are store coupons that print on the bottom of your receipt.

CVS Beauty Book/Pamphlets
Every quarter CVS puts out a beauty book loaded with store and manufacturer coupons that you can buy for .99¢. Some stores will put out just the pamphlet and these are free.

Email
Once you’ve registered your card at CVS.com they will occasionally send you printable coupons.

$/$$ Coupons
You can receive these by CRT, Email, or the scanner. They usually are $4/20, $5/$30, or $10/50. This means when you buy $20 worth of product (before coupons) then use your Q to receive $4 off your total. You are only allowed to use one $/$$ per transaction. These are great to maximize your savings or to turn an okay deal into a great deal!

Coupon Order
When you are ready to check out be sure to give your coupons in this order:
CVS dollar off transaction coupons ($/$$)
CVS store coupons/Manufacturer coupons
ECBs.

Achieving Low OOP
When you first start your OOP will be high however after that you’ll want to try to keep it low by paying with your ECBs. I hardly ever spend more than $1 OOP at CVS. To do this you may have to do multiple transactions.

For instance the other day I had about $15 in ECBs but the total of my entire purchase exceeded that. So I broke it down so that my first transaction was as close to $15 as possible, then I would use the ECBs from that transaction to pay for the next one. I repeated this a few times. Yes, I could of just done one transaction used my $15 ECBs paid $53 in cash and gotten back $72 in ECBs. But really why would I when instead I spent $4.96 OOP and had $25 in ECBs for next time.

Remember when doing multiple transactions to be mindful of other customers. This means once you’re done with a transaction if there is a line let the others go first. Also have all your coupons and ECBs ready to use.

I hope I've helped you to better understand CVSing. If you find you still have questions feel free to leave them in the comments and I will try to answer them.

Go to Day 13.
