Now that you are armed with the basics of couponing you are ready to use it. Or are you?
The most important thing to know in couponing is when to use it. One of the biggest and most costly mistake is using a coupon just because you have it. The trick is to use your coupon when the item is on sale for a great price, on clearance, with a Walgreens Register Reward deal or other offer.
Rock Bottom Prices
Wait for the item to go on sale at the lowest price then use the coupon. This is the time that you want to buy several to hold you until the next sale. Stores tend to place their "loss leaders" (products at rock bottom prices) on the front page.
BOGO Sales
Another great time to use your coupon is during a Buy One Get One Free sale. This is because you can use two coupons. One for the item you are buying and one for the free item. To make a BOGO sale even better combine with a BOGO or FREE item coupon and score two FREE items!
Rebates
Be on the lookout for Mail In Rebates or Try Me Free offers. A lot of times when combined with a coupon it will be a small money maker, since you get back the "purchase price".
Stacking
Stacking your coupon is when you use two coupons on one item. This is done by combining a manufacturer coupon with a store coupon. This allows for greater savings and use of your coupon. So be on the lookout for store coupons and check to see if you have a manufacturer coupon to combine with it.
Doubles
There are stores that always double (some even triple) coupons up to a certain amount. These are the stores you want to use those lower value coupons combined with a sale. Then there are stores that double coupons a few times a year. The amount is usually higher like they double up to $2!
As you can see there are a number of ways to squeeze the most value out of your coupon. Think of your coupon as money you want it to go as far as possible. However, don't feel you have to use it, another will come along and with it a great sale!
